Field work highlights

In the past six months I have driven over 8,500 kms to collect Eucalyptus from the section Adnataria - thankfully the 10 species I am hunting are restricted to eastern Australia. Field work can be amazing, but it can also be tedious, frustrating and, at times, dangerous. The things that you do to stay sane often appear insane to your travelling companion/s.

The good:

  • Beautiful camping sites

  • Wildlife - emus, wombats, bats, lizards

  • Discovering that you can cook decent meals on a camp stove

  • Getting the samples you need

The bad:

  • A tent that falls apart - sigh

  • Constantly reactivating silica - double sigh

  • Snakes

  • The heat
